AvaCon is an all volunteer non-profit organization. Our mission is to promote the growth, enhancement, and development of the metaverse, virtual worlds, augmented reality, and 3D immersive and virtual spaces. We hold conventions and meetings to promote educational and scientific inquiry into these spaces, and to support organized fan activities, including performances, lectures, art, music, machinima, and much more. Our primary goal is to connect and support the diverse communities and practitioners involved in co-creating and using virtual worlds, and to educate the public and our constituents about the emerging ecosystem of technologies broadly known as the metaverse.

Assistant Finance Director
AvaCon, Inc. seeks an organized individual with an accounting background for volunteer position with non-profit organization. This position will be responsible for bookkeeping, accounts payable/receivable, tax preparation, budget projections, and other financial duties. This position will report to the Treasurer/Director of Finance and Sponsorships.
Minimum qualifications: Bachelors degree, 1-3 years experience. Must have a high comfort with using online web-based tools such as Google Docs, blogs, wikis, Twitter, and other Web 2.0 technologies.
Preferred qualifications: An accountant with prior experience working with non-profit organizations a plus. Access to Quickbooks. The ideal applicant will have a good sense of humor, strong work ethic, enjoy working with a team, and be passionate about virtual worlds and the emerging metaverse.
Web Developer & WordPress Guru
AvaCon, Inc. seeks an experienced web developer for volunteer position with non-profit organization. The successful candidate will have professional web development experience and expertise with the WordPress platform and other Web 2.0 technologies. Duties include development and maintenance of the avacon.org and slconvention.org websites, and custom coding of WP themes, plugins, and widgets. Ideally, this person will also have experience coding web based applications to interface with virtual worlds like Second Life and OpenSim, and have experience with DreamHost Control Panel, statistics and performance monitoring, and knowledge of Google Analytics. This position will report to the Director of Human Resources & IT.
Minimum qualifications: 3-5 years professional web development experience. Demonstrable expertise with WordPress platform. Proficient with HTML/CSS/XHTML, programming experience with PHP & LSL a plus. Must have a high comfort with using online web-based tools such as Google Docs, blogs, wikis, Twitter, and other Web 2.0 technologies.
Preferred qualifications: Prior experience working with non-profit organizations a plus. Developers who have experience coding web based applications to interface with virtual worlds like Second Life and OpenSim will be given preference. The ideal applicant will have a good sense of humor, strong work ethic, enjoy working with a team, and be passionate about virtual worlds and the emerging metaverse.
Communications & Social Media Manager
AvaCon, Inc. seeks an experienced Communications & Social Media Manager for volunteer position with the Second Life Community Convention. This position will be responsible for promoting the convention and SLCC community through various social media channels, including responding to questions, fostering community, and general PR related tasks, including updating the slconvention.org website, twitter, in-world group notices, and other platforms. The successful candidate will have professional communications and social media experience, and experience with WordPress and other Web 2.0 technologies. This position will report to the Director of Human Resources & IT.
Minimum qualifications: 2-3 years professional communications and PR/social media experience. Expert knowledge of social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, Plurk, Flickr, YouTube, RSS, etc. Previous experience promoting events and managing/moderating online communities both on the web and in virtual worlds like Second Life and OpenSim required.
Preferred qualifications: Expertise with WordPress and proficiency with HTML/CSS/XHTML a plus. The ideal applicant will also have a good sense of humor, strong work ethic, enjoy working with a team, and be passionate about virtual worlds and the emerging metaverse.
Sponsorship Coordinator
AvaCon, Inc. seeks an experienced sponsorship fundraiser for volunteer position with the Second Life Community Convention. This position will be responsible for soliciting sponsorships for the convention, keeping track of sponsors at the appropriate levels, coordinating the submission of ad materials, communicating with sponsors regarding specifications for sponsorship materials and passing them to the graphic designer and making sure that the sponsors get all the benefits offered for their level of sponsorship. This person will report to the Treasurer/Director of Finance and Sponsorships.
Minimum qualifications: Must be an individual who is highly organized, have a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel or similar, is personable and enjoys meeting new people and can make cold contacts.
Preferred qualifications: Expertise in non-profit fundraising. The ideal applicant will also have a good sense of humor, strong work ethic, enjoy working with a team, and be passionate about virtual worlds and the emerging metaverse.
Graphic Designer
AvaCon, Inc. seeks an experienced graphic designer for volunteer position with the Second Life Community Convention 2011. This position will be responsible for development of graphics for print and web, layout and preparations for printing of the SLCC Program, and working directly with the Sponsorship Coordinator to make sure that ad specifications are met. The successful candidate will have expertise in professional digital graphic tools, should have a modern sense of design, be able to take direction and be able to work with tight deadlines. This person will report jointly to the Director of Finance & Sponsorships and the Director of Human Resources & IT.
Minimum qualifications: At least 2-3 years as working graphic designer in a professional setting. Access to and expertise with Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat, creativity and initiative, ability accept direction and critiques.
Preferred qualifications: A graphic design professional with 5 or more years experience working in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. The ideal applicant will also have a good sense of humor, strong work ethic, enjoy working with a team, and be passionate about virtual worlds and the emerging metaverse.
Lead A/V Technical Manager
AvaCon, Inc. seeks an experienced A/V Technical Manager for volunteer position with the Second Life Community Convention 2011. This position will be responsible for the overall technical requirements of the convention including communicating and coordinating with vendors regarding the specific needs of the convention, management of the A/V, networking, internet and media streams in the main venue and individual break-out rooms, troubleshooting configurations and problems as they arise, and recruitment and management of technical staff. The successful candidate will have technical expertise in networking, internet streaming, a variety of A/V equipment including projectors, sound mixing boards, microphones and video camera connections. This person will report to the Director of Operations & Logistics.
Minimum qualifications: 2-3 years professional A/V experience with knowledge of networks and internet streaming. Applicant must have experience working on live events and mixed-reality situations including streaming directly into virtual worlds. Must be highly organized, methodical and be able to troubleshoot under pressure.
Preferred qualifications: A/V or networking professional with expertise in current audio and video broadcast technologies and equipment. The ideal applicant will also have a good sense of humor, strong work ethic, enjoy working with a team, and be passionate about virtual worlds and the emerging metaverse.
